Why does Material Vary in Appearance Across Models?

I have some models that use the exact same material but it seems to look different on certain parts.

The image below is how i expect the material to look.

In the next image you can see that the material looks a lot more coarse.

Can you have them render side by side in the same scene?
To me it looks like some sharpening and levels have been adjusted on the lower image

They still look different when in live view and rendered in the same scene. The Image style applied to them is the same, so no sharpening etc.

Could it be something to do with the model? If you look at the second image in the original comparison you can see that the circular part in the centre displays the normal material like the first image. Strange that it only happens on certain parts of the model.

What kind of texture is it (procedural vs. image)? If it’s an image based texture, maybe there is a difference in mapping between the two models?

It’s the procedural noise texture and spots. They share the exact same material. I’ve even tried reapplying it just in case.

It could be … or propably … or maybe … (without seeing details of the scene and its materials it’s just guessing).

I would look at:

  • size of the parts (put both in a new scene)
  • material properties and its values compared
  • textures (not procedural) involved, looking at mapping type

What could help, that we can help you?

You can have a look at a test file if you want. It contains just two models that share the same material. The model on the left is how i expect the material to look. The model on the right displays the material differently for some reason.

Hi Paul,

It’s a really odd issue. I was just trying to see what would make the material the same and did the following…

  • Select all of one model, merge mesh so it gets one shape just to simplify the scene.
  • Still the difference so I moved both next to each other in a model set
  • No change so I clicked the ground plane on and off again
  • Now they are both looking the way you don’t want.

Made a little clip of it, merging already done:

I have no clue why this happens, maybe this is an interesting one for the developers @jan.simon.1 and @philip.rasmussen (tomorrow I’ll hope to fix the Alembic scene for you)

Super weird. Is this with CPU mode or GPU mode and does switching from one to the other affect this?

It’s the same in both CPU and GPU. Switching between them doesn’t seem to change anything.

In the actual file I have models that show the material differently on certain parts. So most parts will show the material as expected and other parts will show the grainy version.
